What Is TFSA Contribution Room?

Your TFSA (Tax-Free Savings Account) contribution room is the total amount you can contribute to all your TFSAs without triggering an over-contribution penalty. Every eligible Canadian resident accumulates room starting at age 18, and unused room carries forward indefinitely. Unlike an RRSP, withdrawals from a TFSA add back to your contribution room — but only in the following calendar year.

How Is TFSA Contribution Room Calculated?

Your total TFSA room is calculated as:

  • Annual contribution limit for each year you were 18+ and a Canadian resident (limits vary by year, see table below)
  • Plus: any withdrawals made in previous calendar years (withdrawals re-add to your room on January 1 of the following year)
  • Minus: all contributions you have ever made to any TFSA

For example: If you turned 18 in 2015 and have never contributed, your 2026 room would be the sum of annual limits from 2015 through 2026.

Key Rules to Know

  • Age requirement: You must be 18 or older and a Canadian resident to accumulate room. Non-residents who contribute face a 1%/month penalty tax.
  • Withdrawals re-add: If you withdraw $10,000 in 2025, that $10,000 is added back to your room on January 1, 2026 — not immediately.
  • Spousal TFSAs: There is no spousal TFSA — each person has their own TFSA room based on their own history.
  • Over-contribution penalty: CRA charges 1% per month on the excess amount. Always verify your room at CRA My Account before contributing.
  • Multiple TFSAs: You can have multiple TFSAs at different institutions — the room limit applies across all of them combined.
