  1. Know what the levels mean

Coast FIRE: growth alone reaches your FIRE number by your target age. Barista FIRE: your portfolio covers spending minus part-time income. Lean, regular, Chubby and Fat FIRE: portfolios that support ~$40k, your own, ~$100k and ~$200k of annual spending at your withdrawal rate. All thresholds are community conventions you can customize.

  2. Open the calculator

Go to the FIRE Levels Calculator. All math runs on TrackMoola's servers — your browser only displays results, and nothing you type is stored unless you're logged in and choose to save.

  3. Enter your basics

Current age, target retirement age, total invested assets (RRSP + TFSA + FHSA + non-registered — exclude your home and emergency fund), monthly contributions, and the annual spending your retirement should support.

  4. Set your assumptions

Expected nominal return (7% is a common equity-heavy default), inflation (~2.5%), and safe withdrawal rate. 4% is the classic 25× rule; long early retirements often warrant 3.5%. The calculator works in today's dollars using the real return.

  5. Customize the level criteria

Tap 'Customize level criteria' to set your own Lean/Chubby/Fat annual spends, the part-time income for Barista FIRE, and a coast target age different from your retirement age. Your levels should reflect your city and lifestyle, not someone else's.

  6. Read your results

The result card shows your current level (the highest milestone you've crossed), a progress bar for each level, the dollar target and shortfall, and the age you're projected to reach each one on your current path.

  7. Auto-fill from your profile (Planner and up)

Logged-in members on Planner, Plus, Pro or Lifetime plans get their portfolio, contributions, spending and age pre-filled from tracked accounts, and can save custom criteria so their FIRE level stays current as balances change.

  8. Stress-test and share

Re-run at a 3.5% withdrawal rate to see if your level holds — borderline results tell you your margin. Use Share to create a read-only link (mask exact amounts if you prefer) for a partner, advisor, or your favourite FIRE forum.
